About Shane

Before being elected MLA for Vancouver-Hastings, Shane worked as director of policy and communications for Smart Growth BC, a non-governmental organization devoted to fiscally, socially, and environmentally responsible land use and development. He has also taught courses in Community Economic Development, with a focus on sustainability, at Simon Fraser University, and has been a lifelong environmental activist, tackling local issues at the grassroots level.

In 2001 Shane and his neighbours were successful in preventing a concrete plant from being built adjacent to beautiful New Brighton Park - one of  East Vancouver's few public green spaces, home to various sea life, birds and other wildlife. Shane has also been active in supporting the greening of Hastings Park, including the creation of a world class urban bird sanctuary which recently welcomed its 100th bird species.
