When I try to change it hurts my heart. Trying to fit in, trying to

find a place - any place – where I can be!”

(By Karmina Chang from MISCELLANEOUS Productions' AWAY with HOME)

What do home, identity, and belonging mean to you? These are questions many of us never have to ask, though such introspection might be valuable to all. But for youth who are from recent immigrant families, whose racialized communities are often seen as not belonging, or whose lives have uprooted due to the housing crisis, these questions are deeply personal and urgent.

Vancouver’s hip hop theatre boot camp for youth from the community, MISCELLANEOUS Productions, is currently at work on their 2018 / 2019 project, Away with Home, exploring those themes of home and homeland, identity, and belonging, and the public is invited to a free open rehearsal / community forum at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3 at the Scotiabank Dance Centre.

Away with Home is a transdisciplinary performance work featuring youth from the community, using contemporary and hip hop dance, neo-soul and hip hop music, Taiko drumming, performance art and performance poetry to examine the thematic questions.

Director Elaine Carol began rehearsals with those three questions about home, identity, and belonging, and from there youth have created new works that explore issues of immigration, racism, mental health, bullying, maturation, family, victimization, identity and belonging.

Join the MISCELLANEOUS Productions team on May 3 and hear youth from the community respond to those three questions from their own life experiences, in their own voices.

The Artists & Collaborators: The MISCELLANEOUS Productions Away with Home team are working with an excellent artistic team that includes: director and dramaturge Elaine Carol; contemporary choreographer and teacher Amber Funk Barton; Hip Hop and Streetdance choreographer and teacher Natasha Gorrie; Hip Hop and R&B/Soul composer Natasha Pheko; singing coaches Dawn Pemberton and Juhli Conlinn; Taiko composers and teachers Bonnie Soon and Jason Overy of Uzume Taiko; set designer Yvan Morissette; costume designer Megan Leson; lighting designer Brad Trenaman; assistant directors Mischa Shadloo, Dominique Wakeland, Jesse Cheung and Michelle Leona Beatch; and others.

About MISCELLANEOUS Productions: MISCELLANEOUS Productions is a hip hop theatre boot camp for youth from the community. We present to the public an original theatrical work every two years, and tour, give free peer-run workshops for at-risk youth, and make films about our performances. We integrate international artistic disciplines with community development models and popular culture, and educate the public and professional artists about the prevention of, and responses to, the challenges facing youth who deal with multiple barriers.
