Dear Mayor Robertson and Council,

I am writing to express my opposition to the removal of Park Board oversight of Hastings Park and representation at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) Board.

Hastings Park is the second largest park in the city of Vancouver, and one of the few green spaces on the east side of the city. As such, I have always believed that the governance of Hastings Park is best served in the hands of the publicly elected Park Board – a position council has rejected. However, removing any elected Park Board representation at the PNE board is a further erosion in public control of the park, and presents a significant concern.

Park Board oversight is an important way to ensure that public input into governance decisions at Hastings Park will be heard. Hastings Park is a vital green space for people in East Vancouver, and a sanctuary for birds and other local wildlife. We need to ensure the public continues to have a say in how this important park space will be managed. Continuing to have an elected Park Board Commissioner’s voice at the PNE board table is imperative.

I urge you to exercise your conscience and do what is right for the community at-large in this matter.

Sincerely,

Shane Simpson, MLA
Vancouver-Hastings
