Woodlands institution opened in New Westminster on May 17, 1878, as the Provincial Asylum for the Insane, later renamed the Provincial Hospital for the Insane. In 1950 it was renamed Woodlands School and in 1974 the name was, once again, changed to Woodlands.

The atrocities committed against people in the institutions’ care over the years are unforgivable.

Our Government has recognized this and is currently bringing some much needed closure to Woodlands’ survivors by acknowledging the terrible harms and abuses they’ve suffered during their time in this institution. As of the end of September 2018, the Province has contacted 314 former residents of Woodlands. People who resided at Woodlands prior to 1974 will receive $10,000 in an ex-gratia payment. In addition, people who resided in Woodlands after 1974 will receive up to a maximum of $10,000. The payment will take into account settlement awards previously provided through the Woodlands class action settlement.

The Province is asking former residents or their guardians and caregivers who have not been contacted to call toll free 1 888 523-7192 or send an email that includes your full name, date of birth, address and the name and address of your caregiver/guardian, should you have one. You can send your email to: woodlands.care.facility.residents@gov.bc.ca
