Vancouver-Hastings Food Drive

November 6, 2017

Many members of our community here in Vancouver-Hastings rely on food banks and other ways of getting by. It’s understandable – for too long we’ve seen stagnate wages, rising fees and taxes, and housing that families can’t afford.

We know that food banks are not the solution to poverty and they can frame human rights like food through a lens of charity. That’s why the new government is addressing the issues that cause people to turn to them: lack of access to basic and higher education, affordable housing or childcare, and the fact that BC does not have a Poverty Reduction Strategy. But there are still people going hungry while we do this work.

This winter my community office is collecting non-perishable food items until December 19. We’re open Monday to Friday (9 am to 4 pm) at 2365 East Hastings.

Most needed items include: canned fish or meats, canned legumes, 100% nut butters, rice, canned vegetables, pasta sauces, canned fruit (packed in its own juice or water), whole grain breakfast cereals, hearty soups, stews and chili.
